Synthesizing Information Across Texts (Blogger 7)

Synthesizing takes the process of summarizing one step further. Instead of just restating the important points from text, synthesizing involves combining ideas and allowing an evolving understanding of text.

What do skilled readers do when they synthesize?

  • Stop and collect their thoughtsIdentify the main idea
  • Put the information into their own words and respond to it
  • Combine what they already know and respond to it.

Synthesizing aids reading comprehension because it requires students to put the new material into their own words and combine it with prior knowledge. This makes it more likely that they will remember the information and transfer it to new situations, which further reinforces the information.

How can comparing and contrasting texts help readers to synthesize?

Comparison and contrast techniques help you to examine a topic from multiple viewpoints. When you compare, you look at similarities. When you contrast, you look at differences. By comparing and contrasting, you perform an analysis that brings attention to viewpoints or ideas that otherwise might not have come to your attention.

How can a reader synthesize information among texts?

When synthesizing information, focus on these three things:
  • Who is speaking?
  • Is this focused on a national or local level?
