Writing Prompt:
How can you make a new commitment to writing for this new year?

Most of the action in the novel takes place aboard the Seahawk, a two masted ship, as it crosses the Atlantic Ocean in 1832.

It is a little over 8 minutes long.


The main character in the novel is Charlotte Doyle, a 13-year-old girl of refined upbringing who finds herself aboard a ship with a mutinous crew.

1. Who is the narrator of this novel?

Here in Middle Tennessee, we go back to school in two weeks, so it's the perfect time to begin thinking about icebreaker activities.  My Back to school Bumper Sticker Printable and Activity includes 20 different bumper stickers, 10 color and 10 black and white. There are 2 bumper stickers per page. Use this as an icebreaker in the following way: Students brainstorm some bumper stickers that they've seen and what those bumper stickers say about the person driving the car. Then, the students will write down several bumper sticker sayings that represent them and their ideas or beliefs. Show students some examples of completed bumper stickers. Afterwards, give each student a copy of the bumper sticker template. Each student designs and creates a bumper sticker that represents him or her. English Language Arts Anchor Chart Ideas

Here is a great way of organizing anchor chart ideas. In middle school, students need to go into more detail when comparing and contrasting. I love the idea of using a visual for this strategy. One of my favorites that I've come across today.  Citing evidence is a really big deal under the new CCSS. Making Connections is always a good strategy. We're going to be reading more non-fiction.
