The Parts of a Story

Readers find these elements in fiction and nonfiction stories.

What makes a story worth telling? A great story can make you laugh, cry, or gasp in surprise, but one thing is for sure: You'll give it your full attention! You might even forget your troubles as the story unfolds or gain insight that will change the way you view your life. Something about the plot, characters, or setting will keep you turning the pages of a memorable story.

Think about the last time that you thought to yourself, "Now, that's a great story!" What story did you think was special? Why did you like the story so much? Create a list of the qualities of a good story.

The conflict is the fuel of the story. Conflicts can be external or internal. External conflicts are those forces that are outside of a character. Internal conflicts are those that take place inside a character.

An excellent story that teaches conflict is Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes. Another is the short story "Eva and the Mayor" by Jean Davies Okimoto.
