Academic Rigor


Here is one for you on this Saturday morning:

Thracology is the scientific study of Ancient Thrace and Thracian antiquities and is a regional and thematic branch of the larger disciplines of ancient history and archaeology.  A practitioner of the discipline is a Thracologist. Thracology investigates the range of ancient Thracian culture from 1000 BC up to the end of Roman rule in the 4th to 7th centuries AD. 

Thrace is a historical and geographic area in southeast Europe, centered on the modern borders of Bulgaria, Greece, and Turkey. In antiquity, it was also referred to as Europe, prior to the extension of the term to describe the whole continent. 

As a geographical concept, Thrace designates a region bounded by the Balkan Mountains on the north, Rhodope Mountains and the Aegean Sea on the south, and the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara on the east. The areas it comprises are southeastern Bulgaria, northeastern Greece, and the European part of Turkey. The biggest part of Thrace is part of present-day Bulgaria. In Turkey, it is also called Rumeli. The name comes from the Thracians, an ancient Indo-European people inhabiting Southeaster Europe.

Back to School Bumper Sticker Activity and Printable

Here in Middle Tennessee, we go back to school in two weeks, so it's the perfect time to begin thinking about icebreaker activities.  My Back to school Bumper Sticker Printable and Activity includes 20 different bumper stickers, 10 color and 10 black and white. There are 2 bumper stickers per page. Use this as an icebreaker in the following way: Students brainstorm some bumper stickers that they've seen and what those bumper stickers say about the person driving the car. Then, the students will write down several bumper sticker sayings that represent them and their ideas or beliefs. Show students some examples of completed bumper stickers. Afterwards, give each student a copy of the bumper sticker template. Each student designs and creates a bumper sticker that represents him or her. English Language Arts Anchor Chart Ideas

Here is a great way of organizing anchor chart ideas. In middle school, students need to go into more detail when comparing and contrasting. I love the idea of using a visual for this strategy. One of my favorites that I've come across today.  Citing evidence is a really big deal under the new CCSS. Making Connections is always a good strategy. We're going to be reading more non-fiction.
