Open and Closed Syllable Types plus 10 words that are difficult to spell



A closed syllable is when the phoneme or sound that ends the word is a consonant.


in
cup
tall
milk
tints
fifths
sixths
twelfths
strengths


An open syllable is when nothing comes after the vowel in the syllable.


Look at the word he. We say that the syllable is open because there is nothing closing it in.
Look at the first syllable of each of these words:

ba-by
e-ven
pa-per
a-ble
