25 Writing Prompts for January


  1.  Make a new commitment to writing. What can you do to become a better writer?
  2. What is wrong with telling people what their New Year's resolutions should be? Write a description of your reaction to someone telling you what your resolution should be.
  3. Use imagery to write a story about winter.
  4. Write paragraphs comparing and contrasting a computer and a pen. Include at least four examples of how they are alike and four examples of how they are different.
  5. Use vivid and strong words to describe what the world will be like in one thousand years. Use colorful adjectives to make this world easy to imagine.

  1. You are a modern-day explorer. Where will you go? How will you travel? What will you take with you? Write about your first day of exploration.
  2. Your class decided to have a pet show. Every one of the students brought a pet. Write about what happened during the pet show.
  3. Write about three things that you would change about yourself.
  4. Write a short play about a person who is wasteful and creates loads of garbage and another person who teaches the extravagant person about recycling.
  5. Write a description of what you consider to be the perfect book. Don't describe a particular book. Describe the qualities a great book should have.

  1. The plot of every story is the events that occur in it. The plot keeps a reader turning the pages. Write a brief description of the plot of one of your favorite books and movies.
  2. Every time that you lift the top of the butter dish, the butter has taken a different shape. What are some possible explanations for this occurrence?
  3. Where would you move tomorrow if you had the chance? Describe the good things about this place. Are there any drawbacks to living in this location?
  4. Write a letter to a child born in the year 2015. Consider what information you know that might be valuable and of interest to that child.
  5. You are in a theater seeing a very frightening movie. Describe the behavior of three people who are reacting differently to the film.

  3. Write a description of your personality from a good friend's point of view.
  4. Make a list of people that you would like to say thank you to. Now, choose one and write a thank you letter to that person.
