LSV: Comprehension Instruction in a Workshop Classroom

The most effective comprehension instruction must provide opportunities for students to integrate their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. This model of comprehension may help you plan within the reading workshop model. It includes the following five components:

The teacher provides an explicit description of the strategy, including when and how the strategy should be used.

The teacher models the strategy in action.

The teacher plans for collaborative use of the strategy in action between students, with the teacher's support.

The teacher provides guided practice using the strategy with gradual release of responsibility, leading students toward independent use.

The teacher allows time for students to apply the strategy independently; the teacher supports students through guided practice until they are ready to apply the strategy independently.
