Using Spelling Sorts in the Intervention Classroom

Below are several examples of the different types of spelling/word sorts that should be used in the intervention classroom:



Closed Sort: In a close sort, the teacher gives the students explicit instructions regarding the word study features and provides header cards showing these features.

Open Sort: An open sort gives students the opportunity to sort the word study cards without explicit teacher instructions regarding the word features. This process allows students to use critical thinking skills to discover patterns in words.

Spelling Sort: A spelling or writing sort is used after the students have worked with the specific features for at least one day. This type of sort is critical for solidifying students' ability to recognize and reproduce the patterns being studied. In this activity, the teacher calls out words for students to simultaneously sort and spell. This particular sort is essential for students to make the knowledge transfer from sorting to their writing.

Student Generated Sentences: In this activity, students create their own sentences to demonstrate both accurate spelling and the meaning of the given word. This activity helps students make patterns to spelling word patterns in context, as well as demonstrate their understanding of the given word.

Meaning Discussions: With word study, the process, rather than the product is essential. Students must go through the thought process to fully understand the words they are studying. The only way to accomplish this is through a rich discussion. This dialogue is important at all stages. 

Sound Boxes: This activity has two purposes as an oral language activity and letter recognition.

Word Scramble: Students are given letter cards, and the teacher provides a word for students to spell. They make the word by choosing the correct letters from their cards and writing the words correctly.

Dictated Sentences: Prewritten sentences are dictated to students each day. Each word contains a word that includes the feature studied that week.

Here in Middle Tennessee, we go back to school in two weeks, so it's the perfect time to begin thinking about icebreaker activities.  My Back to school Bumper Sticker Printable and Activity includes 20 different bumper stickers, 10 color and 10 black and white. There are 2 bumper stickers per page. Use this as an icebreaker in the following way: Students brainstorm some bumper stickers that they've seen and what those bumper stickers say about the person driving the car. Then, the students will write down several bumper sticker sayings that represent them and their ideas or beliefs. Show students some examples of completed bumper stickers.
